VISIT US AT THE MARSHFIELD FAIR

AUGUST 21 THRU 30, 2009

The North River Community Lions Club (the above picture was taken before the club changed its name from the Marshfield Lions Club) will operate its GOURMET HOT DOG BOOTH for the ten (10) days of the annual MARSHFIELD FAIR.  Specialty hot dogs top the menu, along with snacks, coffee, juice and soda.  The operation of the booth is the club's major fundraiser.  Stop by when you're at the Fair - we're located right beside the main Exhibit Hall.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

The club is proud of its continued participation in Marshfield's "ADOPT-AN-ISLAND" program in cooperation with the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce.  The club maintains the landscaping in front of the Marshfield Harbor Master's office in Brant Rock, complete with window boxes on the railings!!.  With a commitment to the beautification of the community, the design was drawn up by a club member.  Donations of plant materials from local merchants and the hard work of club members have made the area an attractive spot.

A BLUE RIBBON SITE - FIRST PLACE - 2003

THIRD PLACE AWARD - 2005.

Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf from birth, asked Lions Clubs International to be “her knights of the blind.”  For nearly 80 years, Lions Clubs across the world have been responding to Ms. Keller’s challenge, adopting eyesight conservation as their main charity.  The motto of Lions is, “We Serve.”

The club has constructed a  handicapped-accessible ramp for a 9-year girl in Marshfield who attends the Perkins School for the Blind.  The club purchased the materials for the ramp and club members  provided all the necessary labor.  In recognition of the club's efforts, and wanting to be part of an organization that "serves," the little girl's mother joined the North River Community Lions Club!!

The club has also teamed twice with South Shore Habitat for Humanity in helping to finance and construct  accessible bathrooms for two Marshfield families.  The club donated a fiberglass shower stall for the project, as well as providing financial support.

The club is also involved in eyeglasses for sight.  On a regular basis, in conjunction with LENSCRAFTERS "GIFT OF SIGHT" program, the club provides eye exams and eyeglasses for families that cannot afford them.   And, on-going at all times is the the collection of used eyeglasses. Collection boxes are in two towns for residents to deposit used eyeglasses.   Donations of used eyeglasses may be made at collection boxes located at the Marshfield Town Hall, the Marshfield branch of the Rockland Trust Company, and the Village Market in Scituate, or by emailing the club at info@northriverlions.org. for mailing information. The glasses are then brought to our "partner," LENSCRAFTERS  who reconditions them and distributes them to needy persons in third-world countries.
